We're Not in the Magic Kingdom Anymore

10 Things to Do Near Solterra Resort That Aren't Disney World — Anchor Cove Villa

10 Things to Do Near Solterra Resort That Aren't Disney World

Yes, Disney is 10 miles away. Yes, you're probably going. But what about the days when everyone wakes up and nobody — absolutely nobody — wants to stand in a two-hour line? I've got you.

Let me paint you a picture. It's Day 4 of your Disney trip. You've done Magic Kingdom. You've done EPCOT. Someone cried at the ride height requirement, someone else spent $28 on a churro and doesn't regret it, and your legs have collectively logged approximately four hundred miles. The group chat has exactly one message in it this morning: a single thumbs down emoji from your brother-in-law.

Nobody is going to Disney today. And honestly? Some of the best moments from our family trips near Solterra have happened on exactly these days.

These are some of our family-approved, non-Disney favorites — perfect for calmer days, shorter outings, or mixing things up during your stay. We've been coming to this area long enough to have strong opinions. Here are ten things within easy reach of Anchor Cove Villa that are absolutely worth your time — and none of them involve a Lightning Lane, a parking tram, or a $17 bottle of water.

"Disney is great. We just happen to think a camel staring into your soul is equally life-changing."

Safari Wilderness Ranch
~10 miles · 15 min · Lakeland, FL
I will put this at number one every single time and I will not apologize for it. Safari Wilderness Ranch is the activity I recommend most to every family that stays with us — a 260-acre working ranch where zebras, camels, ostriches, and Watusi cattle wander right up to your vehicle like they own the place. Because they do. A camel looked Jeff directly in the eyes last summer and I'm pretty sure they reached some kind of agreement. We still don't know what it was.
The optional animal feeding at the end is 100% worth it for the laughs alone. Hand a pellet to a giraffe and just watch what happens. It's a huge hit with all ages — yes, even the teens who claimed they weren't excited about it. Especially those teens.
Kelly's tip: Book the guided tour over the self-drive for your first visit — you'll get so much more out of it. Go in the morning when the animals are active and before Florida turns into a sauna. You will stay longer than you planned. You will not mind at all.

Gatorland
~20 miles · 25 min · Orlando, FL
Classic Florida fun — and MUCH bigger than it looks. We made the mistake of rushing our first visit and immediately knew we needed to go back and do it properly. This is not a quick stop. Tons of gators, tons of wildlife, up-close animal encounters, and it manages to be both educational and genuinely exciting in a way that sneaks up on you.
The gator feeding was awesome — easily one of the highlights of the whole trip, and the kids still bring it up. If you're picturing a small roadside attraction you can knock out in an hour, adjust your expectations: Gatorland deserves a real half day, minimum. Trust us on this one.
Kelly's tip: Build in at least 3–4 hours — we rushed it and regretted it immediately. Check the website for show times before you go and plan your arrival around the ones you don't want to miss. Check Groupon for tickets before you buy at the gate.

Aquatica Orlando
~15 miles · 20 min · SeaWorld Entertainment District
Our kids' favorite water park — and they will tell you this unprompted, loudly, in comparison to parks that cost significantly more. Aquatica nails the balance: thrill slides for the older kids, gentle lazy rivers and splash zones for the little ones, and enough variety that nobody ends up standing around waiting for the rest of the group. It's a full day of water park fun without the full theme park price tag.
More budget-friendly than most of the bigger parks in the area, with a great mix of thrills and chill — and if you check Groupon before buying tickets, you'll save even more. We check Groupon every single time. Zero shame.
Kelly's tip: Weekdays over weekends if you have flexibility — it gets busy. Bring water shoes because that pavement gets scorching by midday. Try to head out before 3pm when the afternoon crowds roll in.

SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium
~18 miles · 25 min · ICON Park, Orlando
Smaller and more intimate than you'd expect from an Orlando attraction — and that's genuinely the point. The walk-through ocean tunnel, where sharks and rays drift right over your head while you just stand there and look up, is one of those quiet, beautiful moments that's surprisingly rare in a city built for big loud experiences. Kids who can get overwhelmed by scale and noise tend to absolutely love it here.
Sensory-friendly options are available, and ICON Park surrounds it with shops, food, and other things to do — so you can make it a full outing or keep it short depending on the group's energy that day. Either works perfectly.
Kelly's tip: Check their website for sensory-friendly hours if that's helpful for your family — they do run quieter sessions periodically. Pre-book tickets online for a small discount and to skip the desk queue.

Dinosaur World
~20 miles · 25 min · Plant City, FL
If you have a kid who is passionately, specifically, intensely into dinosaurs — and many kids are, and bless every single one of them for it — Dinosaur World is the move. Over 200 life-size dinosaur sculptures across 35 outdoor acres, fossil dig areas, hands-on exploration, and winding paths through actual Florida woodland. No queues. No showtimes to plan around. No crowds. Just kids running free and losing their minds over a Brachiosaurus.
The outdoor paths mean space to roam and decompress, which makes it a fantastic option for families who need a little more room to breathe. It's also one of the most affordable days out in the area — a genuinely rare thing around here.
Kelly's tip: Morning visits only — Florida does not play nice in the afternoon heat. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. Budget 2–3 hours minimum, more if your dinosaur expert needs to personally inspect every single exhibit. (They will. Block the time.)

Bok Tower Gardens
~20 miles · 25 min · Lake Wales, FL
This one is specifically for the adults in the group who need a moment to remember they are a full human person with interests beyond FastPass strategy. Bok Tower Gardens is a National Historic Landmark — a stunning 205-foot singing tower surrounded by 50 acres of gardens, walking trails, and genuinely peaceful landscape. It feels like a completely different kind of vacation, which after four days of theme parks is exactly what you need.
The Singing Tower carillon concerts at 1pm and 3pm daily are beautiful, and the grounds are naturally low-stimulus — wide open spaces, soft sounds, no crowds. A wonderful option for families with sensory-sensitive guests who need the exact opposite of a packed theme park day.
Kelly's tip: Pack a picnic and plan to do absolutely nothing for at least an hour. Admission is modest, parking is free, and the gift shop actually has nice things in it — not just the usual tourist merchandise. A genuinely lovely afternoon.

Crayola Experience
~25 miles · 30 min · The Florida Mall, Orlando
My kids have been here more times than I can count and they still want to go back — which is genuinely impressive considering we live near Disney World. It's a massive hands-on creativity museum where you name your own crayon, make a personalized label, melt and mold crayons, draw on giant digital walls, and completely lose track of time. One of those rare places where the parents end up having just as much fun as the kids. Possibly more.
For families with sensory-sensitive children, this one is particularly well-suited — bright and colorful without being overwhelming, everything is self-paced, and there are plenty of spots to slow down or step back if needed.
Kelly's tip: Buy tickets online to save money and skip the line at the door. Budget at least 3 hours — more if your kids hit their creative stride. The personalized crayon they name themselves? The one souvenir they'll actually hold onto.

Cinepolis IMAX at Posner Park
~3 miles · 8 min · Davenport, FL
Three miles from Solterra, in the same Posner Park you're already making Target and Starbucks runs to, there is a genuinely excellent IMAX theater. Reserved seating, gourmet snacks, a full bar for the adults, and enough legroom to actually feel like a human being. This is the rainy day move, the escape-the-afternoon-heat move, and the "nobody can agree on anything and we just need to sit in the dark for two hours" move — all rolled into one.
We have done spontaneous afternoon movies here more times than I want to admit and it has saved more than one vacation afternoon. Sometimes everyone just needs to sit still and not make a single decision for 120 minutes. This is the place for that.
Kelly's tip: Book seats online — weekends fill up. Splurge on the good seats; you're still spending less than a theme park ticket. Get the caramel popcorn. That's the whole tip. Just get it.

Lake Louisa State Park
~20 miles · 25 min · Clermont, FL
Florida has a secret most tourists never find: there is genuinely gorgeous natural landscape within easy reach of all the theme park chaos. Lake Louisa State Park is 4,500 acres of rolling hills (yes, actual hills — in Florida, which is its own kind of miracle), cypress swamps, and clear spring-fed lakes. Hike, kayak, swim in designated areas, or just sit by the water and remember what quiet sounds like. It's a lot.
We've brought the boys here deliberately as a reset day more than once. The wide open space, natural sounds, and zero agenda are exactly what's needed after back-to-back high-stimulation days. Particularly great for families traveling with sensory-sensitive guests.
Kelly's tip: Small entrance fee per vehicle. Bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray — all three, no skipping. The 6-mile hiking loop is beautiful but give yourself 2+ hours. Worth every minute.

Stay at the Villa
0 miles · 0 min · You're already there
I put this last because it sounds obvious, but in practice it's the one families underestimate the most. The Solterra clubhouse has a lazy river, a waterslide, a zero-entry heated pool, pickleball courts, a fitness center, and a sandy tots playground — all included with your stay (one-time leisure fee at the clubhouse, which we fully reimburse). And back at the villa: private heated pool, spa, game room, foosball, air hockey, and enough space that everyone can actually spread out and breathe.
Some of our absolute best vacation memories happened on the days we did nothing at all. Jeff grilling on the lanai. The boys in the pool for three hours straight. Nobody asking where we're going next. Just a slow, warm Florida afternoon that didn't cost a thing and didn't require a single FastPass.
Kelly's reminder: Build at least one full stay day into your itinerary. Your future self — lanai, 7pm, something cold in hand — will send you a thank you note.

The area around Solterra Resort is genuinely one of the better-positioned spots in Central Florida for families who want variety — theme park proximity without theme park dependency. There's enough here to fill two weeks of non-Disney activity if you wanted to, which most of you won't, but it's nice to know the option exists.

Now go book Safari Wilderness Ranch. I'm serious. You can thank me later.
